Meanwhile, unknown to the spy, the enemy may fight back by planting counterintelligence operatives to feed false information and prevent the spy from creating any real damage.
Espionage is serious and complicated business. Eventually, the penalty for being caught is often death, especially if it involves government and the military. Governments have a strong policy not to talk about their espionage activities, which is why when spies are caught, they are on their own.
No matter how cool Hollywood has made it look, espionage is still a crime. Anyone caught as a spy in a host country may be punished by deportation, imprisonment, or even execution. On the other hand, if a spy defects and eventually turns his/her back against his/her own country, he/she may also be imprisoned or even be executed by his/her government for treason.

Allegedly, countries like Canada, Germany and the United States are losing billions of dollars through leaked information as a result of industrial espionage activities.

A popular Hollywood movie, the comedy “There’s Something about Mary” demonstrated how private detectives may be hired to spy on people. A number of TV reality shows employ a kind of espionage using hidden cameras and tapping telephone conversations.
