Managers and executives are the most highly trained people in an organization. Yet, some desire to face more challenges in their careers and decide to further develop themselves by enrolling in an Executive MBA program. This is a Master’s degree course in Business Administration that is especially designed to further improve leadership skills already possessed by managers.
The first key competence required of a corporate executive involves communication. To make sure an organization is running smoothly and its employees are happy, business leaders must know how to effectively and relevantly align the company’s mission with how the employees look at their work and the goals of the company. The primary concern of employees is always their salary; an effective leader, however, can convince employees to consider the welfare of the company a top priority as well.
Employees and workers must understand the goals of the company and make them their own. A boss who understands the importance of communication values the inputs of his or her people. Truly effective business leaders facilitate a two-way discourse between themselves and the average employees. Opinions are solicited, feedbacks are accepted, and suggestions are considered.
An employee’s voice must be heard. In a well-oiled organization, everybody’s opinion counts, regardless of position, gender, race, economic status, or academic credentials. Everybody puts in time and energy into the company, and so everybody must get equal amount of attention.
Feedbacks, however, must not only be accepted but also processed well. An effective leader listens to people, weighs the suggestions, balances them with the overall strategy of the company, corrects mistakes, and explanations corporate decisions to the team. Almost always, employees just need to be given the chance to speak, regardless whether their suggestions are implemented or not.
Another leadership skill that may be developed further in Executive MBA programs is organization. Executives must know how to organize their people towards achieving a common goal. Employees must clearly see their place in the organization and how their job descriptions fit in the overall picture.
In these fast-changing times, the corporate leader must also know when to make organizational shifts in order to always stay on top of the game. He or she must anticipate market changes and be able to reassess company structure and strategies. In such cases, job descriptions may be changed and, in extreme cases, some job positions may be removed.
An Executive MBA is focused on developing such skills. Even experienced business leaders need to learn new tricks, because the global business environment is in no way stagnant.
