1. The sole purpose of a sign is to grab people’s attention, which means that a sign must do all it can to be an attention grabber. Graphics, headlines or even white space are some methods to do just that. Attention is the name of the game in which all signs are competing.
2. Even if one cannot control who will eventually see their signs when it is outdoors, when the sign is designed with the purpose of being targeted to a specific market, the sign can effectively serve its purpose. Every product, service or brand must come with a target market in mind and the sign must be cognizant of that. Only then will your potential customers take notice of your promotional materials.
3. Your sign should possess appropriate color combinations that are pleasing to the eye. You should also take note of foreground and background colors for your design, making sure it will not be difficult to focus on the actual message. In addition, make sure that your type and font is clean, crisp and easy-to-read for maximum legibility.
4. When it comes to signages, bigger is better. Naturally, no one will notice a small signage compared to a huge billboard that overshadows it. This does not mean you should go for the biggest signage you can find. This only means that opting for an appropriately sized signage may grant more attention than its smaller and cheaper version.
5. Although bigger may be better, less is always more. People are bombarded with all kinds of advertisement day in and day out. It would be a nice change to see a sign that is direct to the point without any distractions attached to it.
6. Signs are not only limited to static displays as the entrance of dynamic boards and LED screens have paved the way for modern advertising. Movement is key in grabbing the attention of your audience. However, know that too much movement may make your potential customer just veer away from your dynamic signage.
7. Get your audience to act immediately with a message that calls for action. Words such as “Now and Limited Offer” have been proven to increase response rates significantly. When the feeling of urgency is created, you get your message across, which eventually leads to sales for your business.
8. Similar to a sign that calls for action, nothing beats a sign that gives something away for free. Everyone loves free stuff no matter how huge or little the cost may be. As long as your sign states you’re giving out something for free, you can expect a huge crowd crawling to your doorstep.
9. Do no put out a sign for too long. Businesses and companies should make sure to change their signages in steady pace or else response rates will continue to drop. People are usually drawn into new items, which makes rotating displays a must for an effective promotional campaign.
10. No matter how clear, concise and effective a sign’s message can be, if it is not located in a proper place, it will be regarded as almost useless. Signs should be visibly seen by your audience without any obstructions. Make sure your sign is located in a noticeable place.
